A conversation with D-: I believe you can't fly

The following is an impromptu conversation with my 4-year-old son D-, which took place the other day as we walked down the alley on the way to the library:

D-: I can't fly right now.

Me: Oh yeah?

D-: But when I'm 5, or maybe when I'm 10, then I'll be able to fly right through the sky!

Me: I'm older than that-- can I fly?

D- (thinking): No, you just have to hold on to my heels.

Me: Ahh... nice.

D-: Cause I'm like a train up in the sky!

You know, it's high time they came up with a name for those.

When I was younger, I was convinced my dad was a superhero and that he could fly. You mean to say it's the other way around? I'll have to jump off the roof and investigate.

I am impressed with D's optimism. I'm sure he just assumes there is something wrong with you Dad, or you'd be able to fly already.

A train up in the sky? It's like the 30's and the child's never seen a plane.

At least he is willing to let you come along for the ride; you are a lucky man.

And you'll be holding on to his heels as he flies through life, too!

What happens to those amazing imaginations when they get older!

Reality sucks sometimes. Oh- if they could just stay little 'til their Carters wear out!

I think the Wright brothers coined a name for those things.

Oh, to have the innocent faith of a child... *sigh*

I love it when kids make comments like that. It just shows all the possibilities they see in the world.

I love this. Little kids are too much.

Too cute. I can't wait to go on one of those trains in the sky.

You've given me plenty of reason to believe D maybe my long lost son.

Boy, you guys all ran with the bittersweet angle of this, and now I can't help but read it without feeling downright melancholic.

And you know what was perfect? On the drive home yesterday, since the rental truck had a DVD player and there was a little time at the end, I put in a classic and relatively tame episode of Simpsons that featured an actual train in the sky. It's a crazy world.

It is so sweet of him to offer to take you with on his flights. You have taught him well.

Well how else could he show me how much better than me he is? He's always trying to show me up as it is, and he's only 4!
