A conversation with M-: Your ultimate sacrifice is greatly appreciated

This is a conversation I just had with my 3-year-old daughter M-, who was eagerly awaiting one her favorite lunches-- ham roll-ups.

(For those who want the secret recipe: Take some slices of lunch meat, and roll them up. Serve with whatever other random convenient things you can get a 3-year-old excited about.)

M- (still basking in the affirmation that it would indeed be honey ham): What's this ham made from again? Pigs??

Me: Yep, "ham" means a kind of pig meat.

M- (ridiculously happy, and very sincere): If I see pigs? I'm gonna say, "THANK YOU, pigs!" Because pigs make the MOST delicious food in the WORLD! With their bodies.

To top it off, having recently watched Babe and calmly taken to heart Babe's least-favorite aspect of the movie, she suddenly continued a few moments later, still glowing in anticipation of lunch.

M-: Yeah, that's why they all go on the trucks. ... To go to the factory, where they..... make the ham.

She then proceeded to devour a plateful of them.

You may enjoy my previous M- conversations, (6YO son) D- conversations, and (wife) J- conversations.

My husband told me last night that if we were going out for hamburgers, I couldn't talk about the poor conditions on feed lots.

I guess these discussions are our modern day version of going out back to the slaughter house. Just keepin' it real.

I do find the kids have an easier time staying chipper about it.

(And yes, the hamburgers were delicious.)

So I guess M is not going to be a vegetarian like her Aunt, then, huh?

Ah. I wonder if any of that would change if you got a pig for your land to go with the chickens you talk about. Thank you little friend for giving me ham with your body.

Have you not introduced her to the beautiful thing that is pork bbq? If she likes ham, brother, she will go for some pork butt! Oh, and bacon is pretty good too!

Yep, I'm thinking about the beauty of bacon. Actually, I may have to have breakfast for dinner today.

Now THAT's the kind of recipe I can get behind. That's American cooking right there.

They truly do make the most delicious meats ever. I think maybe I'll celebrate with a plate of bacon this morning.

I remember this kind of conversation! And now I have a bunch of teenage vegans. So there you go (I have no idea what conclusion to draw from this, save the handy You Never Know, Do You)

Thanks for including the recipe. I hate it when people post about delicious foods and don't share the secrets.

Perhaps a cooking series, including commentary by your kids would be a natural next step to take.

Made me grin.
